BIOGRAFIA

Nato a Hartford (Connecticut, Usa) nel 1928, morto a New York nel 2007. Dopo il diploma in Fine Arts alla Syracuse University nel 1949, si trasferisce in Europa dove conosce l’arte antica. Negli anni 50 è a New York e sviluppa interessi per il design. Lavoro un anno come grafico presso l’archittetto Pei ed è successivamente impiegato al MoMa di New York. Qui ha come colleghi artisti Robert Rymane Dan Flavin. Dal 1962 si dedica alla scultura realizzando numerose composizioni seriali che sfruttano il modulo base del cubo, pieno e vuoto, e le sue possibilità combinatorie. Tale ricerca si colloca nel solco del minimalismo privilegiando il lato mentale e ideativo. Il Museum of Modern Art di New York allestisce nel 1978-1979 la prima retrospettiva di LeWitt poi ripetuta in diverse sedi degli Stati Uniti. Tra le principali mostre “Sol LeWitt Drawings 1958-1972”, all’Aia nel 1992 e “Sol LeWitt Prints, 1970-1995”, mostra itinerante organizzata dal MoMa nel 1996.

 

BIOGRAPHY

He was born in Hartford ( Connecticat, Usa) in 1928 and he died in 2007. After the graduation in Fine Arts to the Syracuse University in 1949, he moved to Europe where he knew the ancient art.  In the 50’s he is in New York and he developes interests for design. He worked an year as graphic designer with the Architect Pei and subsequently he worked into the MoMa of New York. Here he Knew Robert Rymane and Dan Flavin.
In 1962 he became a sculptore and he realized lots of compositions, using geometric shapes, such ase cubes, triangles etc… This kind of art is collocated of the minimalism movement , privileging the mental side. He took part in lots of art exhibit as the one in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Among the major exhibit are: “Sol Lewitt Drawings 1958-1972” in 1992 and “Sol Lewitt Prints 1970-1995” in 1996.
